ACTION ALERT  HB 1203

HB 1203 "Concerning the definition of the term "material change" for purposes of the laws regulating transactions involving licensed hospitals."  The intent of this bill is to directly interfere with the pending sale of Lutheran and Good Samaritan hospitals to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, Inc.  The Colorado Catholic Conference OPPOSES this legislation.

Currently there is controversy surrounding the sale of these two hospitals to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, Inc. because as Catholic hospitals Lutheran and Good Samaritan would be following the guidance of the Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) which are intended to provide guidance and ethical direction to providers of health care in Catholic-sponsored health care settings. The ERDs prohibit the performance of certain medical procedures such as abortion.

This bill will be heard in the House Health & Human Services Committee on Monday January 28, 2008 at 1:30pm.  Please contact your legislators and the members of the House Health & Humans Services Committee and ask them to OPPOSE HB 1203 which would interfere with the pending sale of Lutheran and Good Samaritan hospitals to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, Inc.
